A estreia de... "90210" (2008)

A spin-off de "Beverly Hills 90210" chegou aos ecrãs americanos na passada terça-feira, 2 de Setembro, e foi um relativo sucesso para a cadeia de televisão CW. No entanto, apesar de ter atraído 4,9 milhões de telespectadores, a nova série não convenceu a crítica.

Se "Beverly Hills 90210" foi inovadora e surpreendente no início dos anos 1990, aparentemente não se pode dizer o mesmo de "90210". Será que já vimos tudo o que havia para ver sobre o quotidiano teenager?

More than just a famous zip code, “90210” is easily the CW’s most-hyped show of the fall season, and the struggling netlet is banking on all of the buzz to draw big ratings. This spinoff, eight years after the first series ended, is a pallid copy of the original fish-out-of-water story, only with shinier cars, fancier clothes and Botox aplenty.

Sticking absurdly close to the same formula as the original, down to the opening theme and the filming style, the new version lacks that same sense of wonder and awe that Beverly Hills decadence and excesses once held over viewers. Thanks to Paris Hilton and reality TV, not much of what happens at the fictional West Beverly Hills High School seems all that shocking. As it is, the show coasts by mainly on a wave of nostalgia and stunt casting.

The two-hour premiere, a combination of the first and second episodes, sets the stage for plenty of drama for Kansas natives Annie Wilson (Shenae Grimes) and her adopted brother Dixon (Tristan Wilds) as they navigate their way among the brazen bloggers and posh cliques of their new school. Making matters worse, their dad, Harry Wilson (Rob Estes) is the new principal.

Os boatos em torno do remake da série que fez as delícias dos teenagers dos anos 90 dizem que Hilary Duff recusou o papel da "descendente" de Brenda (Shannen Doherty) e que será Shenae Grimes (pouco conhecida por cá, participa em "Degrassi: The Next Generation") quem, afinal, vestirá a pele de Annie Mills. Outra presença confirmada para o elenco da série é Lori Loughlin, um rosto que já apareceu em várias séries mas ficou conhecida sobretudo pelos papéis em "Full House" e, mais recentemente, "Summerland".

Shenae Grimes and Lori Loughlin have snagged two of the lead female roles on the CW's "Beverly Hills, 90210" remake.
Grimes, a regular on Canadian skein "Degrassi: The Next Generation," has landed the key role of Annie Mills, a Kansas teen who relocates to California. Character is the spiritual descendant of the role played by Shannen Doherty in the original "90210."
Thesp landed the role after word leaked out that CBS Par Network TV and the CW had sent singer-thesp Hilary Duff a copy of the pilot script, with an eye on having her play Annie. News of the offer surfaced last week on various websites, including E! Online.
By Monday morning, however, Duff's camp informed producers that the actress wasn't interested in taking the role. Decision wasn't based on the quality of the script; it had more to do the kinds of parts Duff is looking to tackle, one person familiar with the conversations said.
Loughlin, meanwhile, is set to play Celia Mills, mom of Annie. Thesp is best known for her lengthy gig on ABC's "Full House." More recently, she starred in the short-lived WB sudser "Summerland" and lends her voice to "Grand Theft Auto IV."

Aaron Spelling, the legendary television producer who died earlier this year, left a pop-culture legacy that spanned 50 years and dozens of shows. But none of his series reflected its era quite as much as Beverly Hills, 90210, which ran for the entire span of the 1990s and helped a generation of teenagers negotiate the trauma of adolescence. The first season has just been released on a 6-DVD box set and is a perfect time capsule of the culture wars, identity politics, and really appalling fashion of the pre-Nirvana era.
