Katherine Heigl, below, will remain on “Grey’s Anatomy” next season, despite speculation that she wanted to free herself from her commitment to the series, Stephen McPherson, the president of ABC Entertainment, said Wednesday. Ms. Heigl, 29, who plays the resident Izzie on the medical drama, said last month that she had removed herself from the running for an Emmy nomination because she felt she was not “given the material this season to warrant” one. The comment fueled talk that Ms. Heigl, a star of “Knocked Up” and “27 Dresses,” wanted to leave the show to pursue movie projects. On Wednesday Mr. McPherson called the turmoil “unfortunate” but dismissed talk that she would leave the cast. “There’s an unbelievable story line for her this year, which is really central to everything that’s going to go on this season,” he said. “Grey’s Anatomy” ranked among the Top 10 shows last season, with an average of 15.6 million viewers.
